Vogue settles the collagen-versus-hyaluronic-acid debate by concluding it isn’t really a competition: the two ingredients do different jobs. According to dermatological doctor Dr Nora Jaafar, collagen loss is a key biological driver of aging while hyaluronic acid loss is a key visual contributor, one affects the skin’s structure, the other its hydration.
Collagen, the body’s most abundant protein, provides the skin’s structural framework, but production declines by about 1% a year from our mid-twenties. Dr Fiona McCarthy, Medical Director and Founder of The Bronte Clinic and a consultant medical oncologist, notes this decline accelerates during perimenopause, leading to sagging, deepening lines, and loss of facial definition. Crucially, topical collagen can’t rebuild structure, the molecule is too large to penetrate the skin barrier — though supplements have stronger evidence, with the largest review to date (January 2026) linking them to improved skin, musculoskeletal health, and osteoarthritis outcomes.
Hyaluronic acid, a humectant that holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water, plumps and hydrates with results visible within minutes to hours. However, Dr McCarthy cautions the effects are transient, depend on continual use, and don’t rebuild the skin’s deeper architecture. Formulation matters too: the best products combine multiple molecular weights, and concentration should sit between 1–2%, as anything higher can paradoxically dehydrate the skin.
For genuine collagen stimulation, both experts point to retinoids as the gold standard, with peptides (particularly matrikines) also well supported, though results take at least three months. And the single most important anti-aging product of all? Daily SPF, since UV radiation is the biggest driver of collagen degradation.
The recommended routine: AM, antioxidant serum, hyaluronic acid serum, moisturiser, and broad-spectrum SPF 50; PM, retinoid, peptide-based treatment, and a hydrating moisturiser. Bottom line: use both ingredients together, hyaluronic acid for immediate hydration, collagen-supporting ingredients for long-term structure.
